GATE – ‘Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering’ is a competitive examination for admission to postgraduate engineering programs in Indian institutions of higher education. It is jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). GATE scores are used for admission to master’s programs and direct doctoral programs in engineering, technology, architecture and science, as well as for fellowship awards by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Duration of the exam

The exam is generally conducted once a year in the month of February. It consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration, which is conducted in online Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

Types of questions :- The exam is conducted in multiple sessions to accommodate the large number of candidates who applied. The exam consists of 65 questions which are divided into two categories: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. The exam is out of a total of 100 marks, and the questions cover a wide range of topics in the respective subject.

  4. Biotechnology (BT),
  5. Civil Engineering (CE )

  7. Computer Science & Information Technology (CS)
  8. Electrical Engineering (EE)
  9. Electronics & Communication Engineering (EC)
  10. Ecology & Evolution (EY)
  11. Geology & Geophysics (GG), Instrumentation Engineering (IN)
  12. Mathematics (MA)
  13. Mechanical Engineering (ME)
  14. Mining Engineering (MN)
  15. Metallurgical Engineering (MT)
  16. Physics (PH)
  17. Production & Industrial Engineering (PI)
  18. Petroleum Engineering (PE) and Textile Engineering & Fiber Science (TF) ).

Eligibility Criteria for GATE Exam 2023

(i) To apply for the the exam, candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering/technology/architecture or a master’s degree in science.

(ii) GATE exam is conducted in English and the question papers have both technical and general aptitude sections.

(iii) This exam is graded on a scale of 0 to 100 with minimum qualifying marks (cutoffs) set by each institute for admission. Cutoffs vary by institution and program and are generally higher for popular programs and institutions.

Apart from being used for admission and fellowship GATE score is also used by public sector enterprises to recruit graduate engineers to entry-level positions.

GATE exam is conducted by a rotation system, where each of the eight IITs and IISc conducts the exam on an annual basis. The institute responsible for conducting the exam is known as the “Conducting Institute” (OI).

The GATE exam is conducted in two sessions: a morning session (9:00 am to 12:00 noon) and an afternoon session (2:00 pm to 5:00 pm). There is one paper in each session.

The GATE exam is a paper-based test, which means that the questions are divided into different sections or “Papers” based on the subject area. Candidates are required to select the paper which matches the subject of their qualifying degree.

GATE exam is a highly competitive exam, in which a large number of candidates compete for a limited number of seats in postgraduate programs and fellowships. The exam is considered a challenging test of knowledge and aptitude in the chosen subject of the candidate.

GATE Exam Admit Card :-

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has postponed the release date of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2023 Admit Card to 9th January 2023. GATE 2023 admit card will be available on the official website – gate.iitk.ac.in. Candidates will be able to download the Hall Ticket with the help of their Enrollment ID and Password. GATE 2023 exam will be conducted on 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th February 2023.

The official notice on the website reads, “Due to operational reasons the download of admit card is delayed and will now be enabled on 9th January 2023.”

GATE Exam Date :-

GATE 2023 exam will start from February 4, 2023 and will be conducted on February 5, February 11 and 12, 2023. The responses of the candidates will be available on the application portal on February 15, 2023. The provisional answer key will be available on February 21, 2023 and challenge for the answer key can be submitted from February 22 to February 25, 2023. March 16, 2023 and the scorecard will be available for download on March 21, 2023.
