Rabindranath Tagore India’s great Philosopher, Poet and patriot. He was a writer, playwright, musician, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He gave a new look to Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art. He became the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He is mostly known for his poetry. He wrote novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, plays and thousands of songs, and in prose, his short stories are best known. He is in fact credited with the origin of the Bengali-language version of the style.

Birth and Early Life

Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in the Bengal Presidency of Calcutta, to Debendra Nath Tagore and Sarada Devi. He was the youngest son among his thirteen siblings. They were raised mostly by servant maids as they had lost their mother in their childhood. He started writing poems at the age of 8. He took inspiration from reading Kalidasa’s classical poetry and started writing his own classical poems.

Most people know him only as a poet, but in fact he wrote poems as well as novels, articles, short stories, travelogues, dramas and thousands of songs. Some of his other influences and inspirations came from his brothers and sisters. His elder brother Dwijendranath was a poet and philosopher and his other brother, Satyendranath, was in a very respectable position. His sister Swarna kumari was a famous novelist.


Rabindranath Tagore received his early education from St. Xavier’s School. His father wanted him to be a barrister. In 1878, he was admitted to the Bridgeton Public School in England. He later studied law at the University of London, but in 1880, he returned from there without taking a degree. Most of his interest was in literature. He did not attach much importance to school education and made many trips with his family. Thereafter his brother Hemendra Nath Tagore taught him and made him physically conditioned. His brother taught him gymnastics, judo and wrestling. Later he studied biography, history, astronomy, modern science and Sanskrit and also studied the classical poems of Kalidasa.

He was married to Mrinalini Devi in 1883.

Writings and compositions

Rabindranath Tagore is the author of the Indian national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’. Tagore has also written many novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, plays and thousands of songs during his lifetime. He is best known for his verse poems. His short stories written in prose have been very popular. Tagore also wrote books on history, linguistics and spirituality. Tagore’s travelogues, essays, and lectures were compiled in several volumes. Gitanjali, Purbi Pravin, Shishu Bholanath, Mahua, Vanvani and Parishesh are Main compositions.

Awards and Achievements

In 1913 AD, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature for Gitanjali, which is the first winning literary prize in Asia. He started a new era in Bengali literature by publishing the first poem at the age of eight and the first short story at the age of 16. The British government conferred on him the title of knighthood in the year 1915 but Rabindranath returned this title in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919.

Political Ideology

His political views were very complex. He criticized European colonialism and supported Indian nationalism. He wrote many songs in support of the Indian independence movement. He played an important role in resolving the differences between Gandhi and Ambedkar on the issue of ‘separate electorates for untouchables’.


He spent the last 4 years of his life in pain and illness. At the end of the year 1937, he became unconscious and remained in this state for a long time. Poems written during this period. He died on 7 August 1941 after a long illness.
